    Effect of drying process on antioxidant properties of date palm fruits

    Aim. In order to identify antioxidant activities and phenolic compound, two varieties of date palm (Mazfati and Kalute varieties) (Phoenix dactylifera) fruits (DPF) from Iran systematically evaluated. Methods. Antioxidant activity determined using typical methods such as DPPH, reducing power and total antioxidant method. The total phenolic content of the dates was measured using Folin-Ciocalteau method. The included samples were gathered at three stages of khalaal, rutab, tamr and dried date from Sam and Jiroft date. The total phenolic content ranged from 1074, 856.4 and 723.8 in Mozafati variety and 921.5, 723.5 and 785.3 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE/100-g-dw sample) in Kalute variety for khalal, rutab and tamr stage, respectively. Results. In both varieties antioxidant activities and total phenolic content decreased by ripening stages. Result of drying process showed that total phenolic content and antioxidant activities varied from temperature and decreased by increase of drying temperature. Conclusion. This research demonstrates Iranian dates could be potential rich resources of natural antioxidants, and could be developed into functional foods or drug for the prevention and treatment of diseases caused by oxidative stress

    Melatonin: An anti-tumor agent for osteosarcoma

    Osteosarcoma is the most common bone tumors which consisted of malignant mesenchymal cells generating osteoid and immature bone. It has been showed that osteosarcoma is common in children and adolescents and shows high mortality rate. A variety of therapeutic approaches (i.e., resection surgery, combined with chemotherapy and radiotherapy) have been used as conventional treatments in patients with osteosarcoma. Despite several attempts to improve therapeutic response, the rate of survival for osteosarcoma has not changed during the past 3 decades. Therefore, the discovery and developing new effective therapeutic platforms are required. Along to the established anti-cancer agents, some physiological regulators such melatonin, have been emerged as new anti-cancer agents. Melatonin is an indolamine hormone which is secreted from the pineal glands during the night and acts as physiological regulator. Given that melatonin shows a wide spectrum anti-tumor impacts. Besides different biologic activities of melatonin (e.g., immunomodulation and antioxidant properties), melatonin has a crucial role in the formation of bones, and its deficiency could be directly related to bone cancers. Several in vitro and in vivo experiments evaluated the effects of melatonin on osteosarcoma and other types of bone cancer. Taken together, the results of these studies indicated that melatonin could be introduced as new therapeutic candidate or as adjuvant in combination with other anti-tumor agents in the treatment of osteosarcoma. Herein, we summarized the anti-tumor effects of melatonin for osteosarcoma cancer as well as its mechanism of action. © 2019 The Author(s)

    Mechanics insights of curcumin in myocardial ischemia: Where are we standing?

    Cardiovascular disorders are known as one of the main health problems which are associated with mortality worldwide. Myocardial ischemia (MI) is improper blood supply to myocardium which leads from serious complications to life-threatening problems like AMI, atherosclerosis, hypertension, cardiac-hypertrophy as well as diabetic associated complications as diabetic atherosclerosis/cardiomyopathy/hypertension. Despite several efforts, the current therapeutic platforms are not related with significant results. Hence, it seems, developing novel therapies are required. In this regard, increasing evidences indicated, curcumin (CRC) acts as cardioprotective agent. Given that CRC and its analogs exert their cardioprotective effects via affecting on a variety of cardiovascular diseases-related mechanisms (i.e., Inflammation, and oxidative stress). Herein, for first time, we have highlighted the protective impacts of CRC against MI. This review might be a steppingstone for further investigation into the clinical implications of the CRC against MI. Furthermore, it pulls in light of a legitimate concern for scientific community, seeking novel techniques and characteristic dynamic biopharmaceuticals for use against myocardial ischemia. © 2019 Elsevier Masson SA

    Targeting regulatory T cells by curcumin: A potential for cancer immunotherapy

    Immune system has critical roles in fighting against several diseases like cancer. Cancer cells evolve several ways to escape from the immune system to remain alive and trigger new phases of cancer progression. Regulatory T cells are one of the key components in tumor immune tolerance and contribute to the evasion of cancer cells from the immune system. Targeting regulatory T cells could provide new horizons in designing and development of effective therapeutic platforms for the treatment of various malignancies. Curcumin is the bioactive pigment of turmeric and a well-known phytochemical with a wide range of pharmacological activities. A growing body of evidence has demonstrated that curcumin affects manifold molecular pathways that are implicated in tumorigenesis and cancer metastasis. In this regard, some studies have indicated that this phytochemical could target regulatory T cells and convert them into T helper 1 cells, which possess anti-tumor effects. On the contrary, curcumin is able to increase the number of regulatory T cells in other conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease. Herein, we describe the anti-cancer roles of curcumin via targeting regulatory T cells. Moreover, we summarize the effects of curcumin on regulatory T cell population in other diseases. © 2019 Elsevier Lt

    Equilibrium and kinetics studies of Direct blue 71 adsorption from aqueous solutions using modified zeolite

    This study deals with the application of Iranian zeolite as a low cost adsorbent for the removal of the Direct blue 71 (DB 71) from colored solution. Important parameters including equilibrium and contact time, initial dye concentration, effect of pH, and zeolite dosage were evaluated. Maximum dye removal was obtained at about 99.8% for 25 mg/L at 120 min of equilibrium. Higher adsorption efficiency of direct dye was obtained at higher dose and acidic pH. To analyze the adsorption equilibrium and kinetic, Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherms as well as four kinetic models encompassing pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order, intraparticle diffusion, and Elovich were evaluated. The Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.995) and pseudo second-order models, gave the best fit to equilibrium experimental data. In Langmuir analysis, the maximum adsorption capacity (qm) by 13.66 mg/g was determined. Finally, the characteristics of zeolite including both natural and modified, such as compositions, surface morphology by X-ray diffraction technique (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were obtained. According to XRF analysis, it was demonstrated that Al2O3 and SiO2 are the most part of natural and modified zeolite.     A Colour Rendering Index for Dichromats

    We propose a method of evaluating the colour rendering quality of light sources tailored to dichromatic vision. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed color rendering index (CRI) is the first such index to be specifically designed for dichromats. Previous CRIs have been defined only for trichromats and they generally rely on measuring ΔE colour differences in a standardized uniform colour space such as CAM02-UCS. Since these spaces are defined only for trichromatic colour vision these methods do not generalize to the case of dichromatic colour vision.     Superpixel-based automatic segmentation of villi in confocal endomicroscopy

    Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy (CLE) is a technique permitting on-site microscopy of the gastrointestinal mucosa after the application of a fluorescent agent, allowing the evaluation of mucosa alterations. These are used as features by skilled technicians to stage the severity of multiple diseases, celiac disease or irritable bowel syndrome among the others. We present an automatic method for villi detection from confocal endoscopy images, whose appearance changes with mucosal alterations. Superpixel segmentation, a well-known technique originating from computer vision, is used to identify and cluster together pixels belonging to uniform regions. Each image in the dataset is analyzed in a multiscale fashion (scale 1, 0.5 and 0.25). From each superpixel, 37 features are extracted at multiple image scales. Each superpixel is classified using a random forest, and a post-processing step is performed to refine the final output. Results in the test set (70 images, 30870 superpixels) show 85.87% accuracy, 92.88% sensitivity, 76.99% specificity in the superpixel space, and 86.36% of accuracy and 87.44% Dice score in the pixel domain. © 2016 IEEE

    Incidence and mortality of breast cancer and their relationship with the human development index (HDI) in the world in 2012

    Background: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women worldwide and its incidence is generally increasing. In 2012, it was the second most common cancer in the world. It is necessary to obtain information on incidence and mortality for health planning. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the human development index (HDI), and the incidence and mortality rates of breast cancer in the world in 2012. Materials and Methods: This ecologic study concerns incidence rate and standardized mortality rates of the cancer from GLOBOCAN in 2012, and HDI and its components extracted from the global bank site. Data were analyzed using correlation tests and regression with SPSS software (version 15). Results: Among the six regions of WHO, the highest breast cancer incidence rate (67.6) was observed in the PAHO, and the lowest incidence rate was 27.8 for SEARO. There was a direct, strong, and meaningful correlation between the standardized incidence rate and HDI (r=0.725, p�0.001). Pearson correlation test showed that there was a significant correlation between age-specific incidence rate (ASIR) and components of the HDI (life expectancy at birth, mean years of schooling, and GNP). On the other, a non-significant relationship was observed between ASIR and HDI overall (r=0.091, p=0.241). In total, a significant relationship was not found between age-specific mortality rate (ASMR) and components of HDI. Conclusions: Significant positive correlations exist between ASIR and components of the HDI. Socioeconomic status is directly related to the stage of the cancer and patient's survival. With increasing the incidence rate of the cancer, mortality rate from the cancer does not necessariloy increase. This may be due to more early detection and treatment in developed that developing countries. It is necessary to increase awareness of risk factors and early detection in the latter

    Epidemiology and trends in incidence of kidney cancer in Iran

    Background: Kidney cancer has shown an increasing trend in recent decades. This study aimed to determine change in the incidence rate between 2003 and 2009 in Iran. Materials and Methods: In this study, national cancer registry data were used. Crude incidence rates were calculated per 100,000 and age-standardized incidence rates (ASRs) were computed using the direct standardization method and the world standard population. Significant trend of incidence rates was examined by the Cochran-Armitage test for linear trend. Results: A total of 6,944 cases of kidney cancer were reported. The incidence cases increased from 595 patients in 2003 to 1,387 patients in 2009. Sex ratio (male to female) was 1.67. ASR also increased from 1.18 in 2003 to 2.52 in 2009 per 100,000, but the increasing trend was not significant. Conclusions: A slow increasing trend of incidence rate was observed in the study population. This may be due to an increase of risk factors. It is suggested to perform a study on risk factors for the cancer
